The Unfulfilled Sacrifice: Eritrean Heroes Denied Rest in Their Homeland
by Dr Thomas Araya

Eritrea’s history is one defined by resilience, struggle, and unwavering dedication. The nation’s hard-won independence, achieved in 1991 after a brutal 30-year war of liberation, stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifices of countless Eritrean heroes. These men and women gave everything they had — their youth, dreams, and ultimately their lives — to secure a free Eritrea. Tragically, however, some of these selfless fighters have been denied the right to be laid to rest in the very land they fought to liberate. This denial not only dishonors their legacy but also reflects the complexities of Eritrea’s post-independence political landscape.

The Struggle for Independence and the Sacrifice of Eritrean Heroes

Eritrea’s war of independence against Ethiopian occupation demanded extraordinary sacrifices. Fighters from all walks of life — farmers, students, workers, and intellectuals — joined the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) and later the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) to resist oppression. Living in harsh conditions, they endured hunger, illness, and constant threats of death. Despite these hardships, their determination never wavered. Their sacrifices ultimately secured Eritrea’s independence in 1991, a victory that symbolized the triumph of perseverance and unity.

Yet, the victory came at a heavy cost. Tens of thousands of fighters gave their lives, while survivors carried permanent scars — both physically and emotionally. These individuals were not only warriors but also visionaries who believed in a brighter future for Eritrea — a future founded on justice, freedom, and equality.

Post-Independence Challenges and Political Exile

Despite the heroic struggle for liberation, Eritrea’s post-independence political landscape has been marred by authoritarianism, repression, and conflict. Former fighters, once hailed as national heroes, found themselves targeted for criticizing the government or advocating for reform. Many of these veterans were forced into exile, seeking refuge in foreign lands.

In a tragic twist of fate, some of these exiled heroes passed away far from their homeland, denied the right to be buried in the soil they fought so hard to free. For a nation that prides itself on honoring its martyrs, this denial represents a painful contradiction — a failure to uphold the very values those fighters dedicated their lives to defending.

The Emotional and Cultural Impact

In Eritrean culture, burial in one’s homeland holds deep significance. It is not merely a matter of tradition but also a symbol of closure, respect, and belonging. For families of fallen heroes, being unable to bring their loved one’s home intensifies their grief. It robs them of the opportunity to honor their legacy in accordance with cultural customs and denies the deceased the peace they fought so fiercely to achieve.

This painful reality also fractures the unity Eritrean fighters once shared. Many who dedicated themselves to the liberation movement now find themselves marginalized, their contributions overlooked or erased from official narratives. The denial of burial in Eritrea becomes not just a political statement, but a symbolic act of exclusion from the nation’s collective memory.

A Call for Justice and Recognition

Eritrea’s independence was built on the unwavering dedication of its people. Denying the nation’s heroes the dignity of resting in their homeland undermines the very principles for which they sacrificed everything. To truly honor their legacy, Eritrea must embrace reconciliation, respect differing voices, and restore the dignity of those who devoted their lives to its freedom.

Allowing Eritrean heroes to be buried in their homeland is not just an act of compassion — it is a necessary step toward national healing. By recognizing the contributions of all who fought for Eritrea’s independence, regardless of their political stance or exile status, the nation can reaffirm its founding values of unity, justice, and respect for those who gave everything for its freedom.
