IN APPRECIATION FOR MICHAEL JORDAN’S ANNOUNCEMENT TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THE STRUGGLE AGAINST INJUSTICE WORLDWIDE.

Though injustice takes different forms in different parts of the world, all justice seekers, who rise up against any form of injustice, despite geography, race, faith, colour, culture, language or any other social distinction, should realize that they are fighting in the same trench. Though the united front of the enemy is not easy to detect due to the ability of the enemy to disguise their motive and hostile activities, and the possession of highly-advanced expertise to camouflage, the tentacles of injustice are spread worldwide and are attacking humanity in unison. It is for this reason that the fight against injustice, be it of social, political, economic, and cultural nature, or takes the form of gender-related inequality, requires that we pull all our resources (material, financial, social, diplomatic or otherwise) together and make sure that no contingent of the human society stays on sidelines.

It is for the aforementioned reason that we, as Eritrean justice seekers, felt highly honoured to read the fabulous Joint Statement of the American basketball legend, Michael Jordan, and Jordan Brand in which they announced a donation of 100 million dollars to help “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.” (https://www.tsn.ca/michael-jordan-jordan-brand-pledge-100m-to-fight-for-racial-equality-social-justice-1.1483582).

With regard to police brutality and injustice, we would like to bring to the attention of Michael Jordan and his family that the Eritrean people are daily experiencing these savage forms of physical violence in their ugliest forms, for almost three decades and have been struggling to end the dictatorship, which has turned the country into unbearable hell, causing the flight of almost two million people (close to half of the population of the country and the exodus is daily continuing), including the youth, the skilled and the educated, who have been dangerously uprooted, making the country the most glaring example of a police state, ruled without constitution, parliament, rule of law, basic human rights, independent press, human decency, accountability and transparency, any human society deserves.

The conditions under which our people are fighting against police brutality and all forms of injustice are extraordinarily unique in the sense that the struggle lacks the means and the resources to face the dictatorship and its oil-rich allies in the Gulf, who have been investing their resources to quell the struggle for justice in Eritrea, the Sudan, Yemen, Libya, Egypt and Ethiopia, to name a few, taking the inspiration of the struggle for justice as a threat to their thrones. For the Eritrean people, the matter has reached the level to be described as “to be or not to be” because the ruling gang has been engaged in cleansing operations. It has become vital to emphasize, without any reservation, that any support from the progressive forces of the world is absolutely urgent, timely, and makes all of the difference in saving the lives of the people and the countries, that are at the verge of collapse.

While we hope the death of George Floyd would constitute the necessary catalyst to bring the long-desired radical change for African-Americans and all coloured citizens of the US, we stick great value and significance to the words of Michael Jordan and company, reading:

“We represent a proud family that has overcome obstacles, fought against discrimination in communities worldwide and that works every day to erase the stain of racism and the damage of injustice…”

Finally, it is important to note how much we thank Michael Jordan and his family for their passion to see a fair world, by helping the oppressed peoples of the world in their struggle for basic freedoms, justice, equality, peace and democracy, conveying the message that their joint statement is a ray of hope for the peoples of Africa, a region out of desperation is extending its hand for help and support in the fierce struggle against all forms of injustice, oppression, and physical liquidation.
