A dedicated friend of Eritrea and its people, passed away, on 12 August 2024.

Arild Jacobsen, Stavanger, A dedicated friend of Eritrea and its people, passed away, on 12 August 2024.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of our dear friend and a true father figure to Eritrea, Arild Jacobsen. My connection with Arild began in 1984 when I worked for the Eritrean Relief Association. He was an exceptional and dedicated friend to the Eritrean people, embodying the love and support of the Norwegian people for Eritrea and its struggle for liberation.

It is truly disheartening to witness the passing of such cherished friends of Eritrea, who often go unrecognized by the Eritrean public due to the current circumstances in Eritrea. Nevertheless, their life-saving contributions and unwavering love for the Eritrean people during their times of hardship have been remarkable. These acts of kindness and dedication will forever be etched in the history of Eritrea.

May God grant him eternal peace. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

I also thank Mr Paulos Tesfagiorgis Baatai, my Ex-Director of Eritrean Relief Association (ERA), who attended and delivered a farewell message, at the ceremony in church, in Stavanger, on August 16 2024.

Mr Paulos, farewell message in full:

Stavanger August 16, 2024

FAREWLL MY DEAR BROTHER.

Arild, my brother, my friend, my family. So you decided to move on! Happy journey!

You lived a full life; a life of integrity and service. You have supported many thousands of people in their time of need and although they might not have had the opportunity to say thank you, they know deep in their hearts that there were Norwegians, there was a Norwegian, who selflessly supported them.

Your dedication to humanitarian mission; your willingness and capacity to share, and your commitment to see a free and independent Eritrea so that its people can live in freedom, in dignity and in harmony, had no limits. You shared your determination, your zeal, your time, your youth and energy.

Arild served as the head of ERD, Eritrean Relief Desk, later named the Emergency Relief Desk, based in Khartoum, Sudan. The ERD was a consortium of 9 core ecumenical humanitarian agencies dedicated to delivering emergency relief supplies through what we called Cross Border Operation; that is from the Sudan into Eritrea, which was at the time officially part of Ethiopia. ERD delivered 100s of thousands of tons of food supplies [over 7 million quintals] and other humanitarian support totaling US$350 million dollars. It was a major operation. This level of operation needed high level of coordination, smooth working relationship based on honesty and absolute trust. The Eritrean Relief Association was ERD’s counterpart in Eritrea. Arild headed this consortium for a number of years. He moved into Eritrea after independence, opened the Norwegian Church Aid office in Asmara and served until it was closed down. All these years, Arild served with utmost commitment with the best interest of the Eritrean people at heart.

Arild dear brother; Arild ወዲ ያቆብ (Wodi Yacob – the son of Yacob) we all live one life and the one life that you lived and leaving behind is one of service and integrity, with no regrets. It is a blessed life, and, on your wayward journey, all these blessings will accompany you taking you to a green pasture where you will get the eternal rest.

Farewell my dear brother. We will meet there and continue together the journey of service, integrity and commitment and the joy that emanates from it.

Your brother and friend,
Paulos Tesfagiorgis Baatai.
