A Peaceful Communication for a Peaceful Relationship
By Adam, Luwam, and Abnet Gebremedhin
It is evident that peaceful communication is absolutely necessary for all of us in our daily lives. It is also certain that peaceful communication is very essential in establishing and maintaining harmonious relationships within our families—between husbands and wives, between parents and their children, among family members and relatives, and among friends and members of Churches and civic communities. If we desire peace to prevail among us, it is a divine practice to communicate and make peace with our so-called enemies as much as we do with our friends. In fact, if we really want peace, we do not need to talk to our friends; we talk to our enemies.
It is truly beyond expectation for Eritrean children to witness conflict and division within our Eritrean Orthodox Church, as well as separation among Eritrean households in the diaspora. Eritrean elders in the diaspora can never bring peace to their children until they first make peace with themselves. It is love and friendship within our Eritrean households and communities that should bind us together and enable us to live and work in peace.
We all need to understand that conflict or war does not only teach us not to love our enemies, but also to hate our friends. It is obvious that if we are at war with one another, we are not at peace with ourselves. If we do not have peace with one another, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to one another as brothers and sisters. If every one of us stands up for peace instead of war, peace will prevail and war will cease. If we truly seek peace, there is plenty of it around us for all to share and to strengthen our personal relationships.
It is commonly observed that some of us choose to focus on what separates us from each other rather than on what truly connects us to one another. We must communicate among ourselves, because peaceful communication is a bridge that brings us together and allows our differences to disappear. People often hate each other because they fear each other. They fear each other because they do not know each other. They do not know each other because they do not communicate with each other. They do not communicate with each other because they do not come together and behave as normal human beings.
Thus, we must all remember that the first duty of love and friendship is to come together as docent human beings and engage in peaceful communication with utmost respect, honesty, and great sense of responsibility. Through this, we can truly know one another and achieve mutual understanding within ourselves. We must honor and cherish the legacy of love, wisdom, and cultural heritage we have inherited from our Eritrean forefathers and foremothers, who are watching over us from heaven.
Where there is peace, there is love; and where there is love, there is life. Peace is the presence of love and friendship, while war is the presence of hate and violence. Where there is peace, there is no war; and where there is war, there is no peace. In view of this fact, peace is noble, honorable, and powerful, while war is disgraceful, destructive, and miserable. We can only live gracefully in peace if we truly surrender our lives to peace. We should not take the important things in life for granted. We must be grateful to the Lord for all His blessings, especially for His gift of life. We give glory to the Almighty God and we wish unconditional peace to all Eritreans in the diaspora.
