To suggest that the migration of Eritreans is evidence of a rejection of Eritrea’s sovereignty is to misunderstand both the nature of political dissent and the meaning of national identity.
Throughout history, citizens have fled war, repression, economic hardship, and political instability without ever renouncing their love for their country or their commitment to its independence. Eritreans are no different. Many who live abroad remain among the strongest defenders of Eritrea’s sovereignty while simultaneously advocating for democracy, constitutional governance, human rights, and political reform. These positions are not contradictory—they are complementary. One can oppose a government without opposing the nation.
Eritrea’s internal political challenges are real and deserve honest discussion. They are matters for Eritreans to resolve through peaceful dialogue and national reconciliation. They do not diminish the legal or moral foundations of Eritrea’s statehood, nor do they invite others to question the legitimacy of its sovereignty.
History teaches us that the legitimacy of a nation is not determined by its geographic size, population, or military strength. It is determined by the internationally recognized right of a people to self-determination. Eritrea’s independence was secured through immense sacrifice, affirmed by an internationally supervised referendum, and recognized by the global community. Those facts cannot be erased by political rhetoric.
I respectfully encourage you to revisit Ethiopia’s own history. Ethiopia has experienced periods of civil war, displacement, constitutional crises, and political upheaval. Yet no one would seriously argue that these internal challenges invalidate Ethiopia’s sovereignty. The same principle must apply to Eritrea. International law cannot be invoked selectively; consistency is the foundation of credibility.
The future relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia should not be built on historical revisionism or inflammatory rhetoric. It should be grounded in mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, recognition of internationally recognized borders, and an unwavering commitment to the sovereign equality of all states.
Eritreans hold diverse political views about the future of their country. We debate governance, justice, constitutionalism, and reform. But there is one principle on which Eritreans across the political spectrum overwhelmingly agree: Eritrea’s sovereignty is not open for negotiation.
Sovereignty belongs to the people—not to any government, political party, or generation. Governments may change. Policies may change. Leaders may come and go. But the sovereignty of the State of Eritrea, secured through extraordinary sacrifice and recognized by the international community, remains permanent.
History records facts. It is our responsibility to respect them, not rewrite them.
