The Moral Ledger and the Silence of the Learned: Education, Debt, and the Responsibility of the Eritrean Intellectual.
An Open Letter to the Former Students of the University of Asmara on the Occasion of the 25 - 26 June 2026 Springfield, Virginia (Washington, D.C. Area) Reunion
Dr. Gebre Gebremariam
On 25 - 26 June 2026, former students of University of Asmara will gather in Springfield, Virginia (Washington, D.C. area). The halls will echo with laughter, shared memories, and the sweet nostalgia of our youth at the University of Asmara. On the surface, this reunion is a triumph – a celebration of a generation that survived upheaval to find professional success across the globe. Yet, beneath the convivial atmosphere and the clinking of glasses, there is a silent, ghostly presence at the table – the Eritrean people.

While many of my peers gather to reminisce, I find myself elsewhere, engaged in the urgent work of training and mentoring the next generation of Eritrean youth. For me, this is not a choice of preference, but a fulfillment of a contract. As we acknowledge our personal achievements, we must confront a haunting and unavoidable question: What have we done with the "public good" that was entrusted to us by a nation that could ill afford to give it?
The Social Contract: Education as a Public Debt
In the context of a developing nation like Eritrea, education is never a private commodity; it is a profound social contract. In a country of scarce resources, every nakfa invested in a university degree represents a heavy opportunity cost – money diverted from primary healthcare, rural infrastructure, and basic food security. The farmer in the highlands, the laborer in the ports of Assab and Massawa, the fisherman in the Red Sea Coast, and the nomad who roams the arid plains in search of pasture for his herd effectively funded our intellectual ascent.

This was not a gift; it was an investment. The implicit expectation was that we would return as the architects of national development and the guardians of justice. John Dewey argued that education is not merely a tool for individual careerism, but a social process essential to the continuity and improvement of society (Dewey 1916, 12 – 15). Similarly, endogenous growth theory affirms that "human capital" is the primary engine of societal transformation (Romer 1990).
When the educated class migrates and then retreats into a shell of private well-being, it commits what I term "intellectual embezzlement." By converting society’s collective investment into private gain in a third country, the diaspora leaves behind a vacuum of leadership. In Eritrea, this has birthed a tragic paradox: one of the most highly educated diasporas in the world coexists with one of the most institutionally hollow and unconstitutionally governed states on earth.
Institutional Decapitation and the "Shattered Cage"
The ongoing Eritrean "brain drain" has metastasized into "institutional decapitation." Eritrean professionals thrive in Western medicine, high-tech engineering, and elite academia, yet the nation they left behind languishes without a constitution, a functional legislature, or a transparent judiciary.
Horace Mann famously described education as the "great equalizer of the conditions of men" (Mann 1848). However, for education to equalize, it must be active. When it remains dormant in the face of tyranny, it becomes an inert asset. Many of our peers have succumbed to what I have analyzed as "The Shattered Cage" – a state of diaspora anomie where the trauma of the national experience leads to a psychological withdrawal into the comforts of middle-class Western life (Gebremariam 2025c). This withdrawal has produced a class of "assimilated professionals" who have effectively defaulted on the moral debt that financed their success.
The Organic Intellectual vs. the Myth of Neutrality
Antonio Gramsci’s concept of the "organic intellectual" provides a necessary mirror for our class. Intellectuals are not isolated thinkers; they are products of a social group, tasked with articulating a collective consciousness and guiding social transformation (Gramsci 1971, 5 – 6).
The Eritrean people, currently silenced by a pervasive security apparatus, desperately require their educated sons and daughters to speak for them. Yet, too often, diaspora intellectuals adopt a posture of "political neutrality." In the Eritrean quagmire, neutrality is a fiction. To remain silent in the face of indefinite national service, the absence of due process, mass youth exodus, and extrajudicial repression is to be complicit. The education we received was paid for by the very people now crossing the Sahara and the Mediterranean or languishing in secret prisons without trial. To disengage is to witness their suffering with a degree bought with their sacrifice.
Truth-Telling as National Defense: A Roadmap for Action
Over the past several years, my work – from Unchaining Eritrea to The Inviolable Red Line – has been driven by a singular conviction: if one voice can methodically challenge a regime’s propaganda, what could a unified intellectual class achieve? In my recent analyses, I have sought to provide an intellectual shield against both internal and external threats:
• Refuting Revisionism: I have documented the "Red Sea Access Gambit" and its threat to Eritrean sovereignty, refuting the belligerent narratives propagated by the Ethiopian leadership (Gebremariam 2025a, 2026a).
• Exposing Systemic Decay: I have analyzed the "Bashasha-fication" of truth and the "Leaking Bucket" of our national potential, where state policy serves only to prolong a dictatorship at the cost of the nation’s future (Gebremariam 2026b, 2026c).
• Analyzing Social Control: I have explored the dynamics of "voluntary servitude" and the "coerced silence" that sustain the status quo (Gebremariam 2025b).
These are not abstract academic exercises; they are acts of "intellectual defense." When the educated remain silent, "false narrations" become accepted international truths. If we - the experts in law, history, and economics - do not provide rebuttals, the world will listen only to the voices of the aggressor and the dictator. The peasantry cannot write policy briefs or argue in the courts of international opinion. That was the job we were taught/educated to do.
Historical Precedents: The Diaspora as Vanguard
History proves that the transformation of nations often begins in the diaspora. The Generación del ’37 in Argentina used their exile to draft the constitutional visions that eventually transformed a cattle-ranching colony into a modern republic (Katra 1996). The South African anti-apartheid movement succeeded because its diaspora intellectuals organized, lobbied, and broke the regime’s narrative on the global stage (Mbeki 2002,).
In each case, the educated class did not simply "melt" into their host societies. They mobilized. By contrast, the Eritrean intellectual class remains fragmented and largely silent, even as our national sovereignty is threatened by revanchist neighbors and our internal governance collapses.
A Challenge to the Alumni
As you gather in Springfield, Verginia (in the Washington area), I urge you to look at your diplomas and see the faces of the taxpayers who paid for them. We must ask: Where is our collective intellectual voice? Why have we allowed the "narcissism of small differences" to prevent a unified front against tyranny? What legacy are we building for the youth who look to us for leadership? Will history remember us as the generation that took the public money and ran, or as the generation that stood on the side of truth and the people?
I am not with you today because I am occupied with the very task I am calling you to join: the education and empowerment of the younger generation. Mentorship is the interest payment on our social debt. If we do not pass on the values of constitutionalism, sovereignty, and justice, our education dies with us. We will be remembered in history as the generation that took the public money and ran, instead of the generation that stood on the side of truth and the people?
Conclusion: The Moral Ledger
The Eritrean condition is severe, but it is not irreversible. The tools for transformation – critical thinking, legal reasoning, and institutional knowledge – are the very tools we acquired at the University of Asmara. What remains is the will to use them. We must reject the comfort of silence and the illusion of neutrality. We must move beyond the "narcissism of small differences" and commit ourselves to the shared defense of our nation's sovereignty and the struggle for democratic transition.
Let this reunion mark the beginning of a "repayment of our debt." Let it be recorded that the alumni of the University of Asmara did not merely witness their nation's decline, but rose, collectively, as the vanguard of its intellectual resistance and democratic renewal. It is time to pay back.
